Neighbor KJ Warunek said The New York Post: ‘This is a touching and heartbreaking story.

“There were at least 25 people [on the first block]. When I looked at the next block there were another 20. I’ll say that’s how the whole walk went.

The notice read: “My name is Mellow and I have lived in Dupont since September 2019 with my landlord Kevin.

“Some neighbors may have petted me or given me treats before, while others I only know from their own dogs who say hello to me when we pass by.

“No matter how well we know each other, you have made my life so much richer than any rescue dog could have hoped for.”

“I am so grateful to have such caring neighbors and to live in a community that takes such good care of each other.

“I have definitely slowed down over the years and unfortunately that is why you are getting this letter.

“I was recently diagnosed with lymphoma and will be leaving for dog heaven in June.

“I don’t know exactly when I’ll be going, but every day for the past few weeks has been a struggle for me to get around the neighborhood like I’m used to.

“Therefore, while I still can, I will be walking around the neighborhood on Saturday June 3 from 7-8 p.m. and would like to say goodbye to you face to face if you are available.

‘Come pat me on the head or rub my stomach and I’ll be forever grateful (I love people after all).

“I’ve put a map of our walk on the back and the times I think I can pass by your place (I can be slower, so excuse me if I’m late).

“As for my owner, once I pass away he probably won’t take as many walks as we do now so you might not see him as often.

“I know he will miss seeing you all, and especially the other animals in the neighborhood, as much as I do.

‘Thank you again for all the love you have shown me over the past 4 years! I hope to see you on Saturday and thank you for making my life so enjoyable!’
