Team GB’s Jake Jarman claimed bronze in the men’s floor final just a day after Bryony Page claimed springboard gold.

The 22-year-old performed a brilliant routine culminating in a triple backflip to sneak into the medal spots with just one athlete ahead of her.

And that gymnast was his teammate Luke Whitehouse, who looked to have secured a medal to knock Jarman off his bronze spot.

But it was heartbreaking for the Englishman when the judges downgraded his difficulty score, leaving him in sixth place with a score of 14.466.

The 22-year-old had reached the final with the highest score in qualifying and also topped the standings on the floor during the men’s all-around final.

But his routine was not as clean as that of gold medallist Carlos Edriel Yulo of the Philippines, who scored 15.001, while Israel’s Artem Dolgopyat took silver, with Jarman right behind on 14.933.

After the competition, a dejected Whitehouse said: ‘I mean it was probably the best floor final I’ve ever seen, and coming up last, I had all the pressure on me, but I really enjoyed it.

“I came here with the intention of enjoying it. I am a European champion and I knew I was capable of being one here, but it didn’t happen like that.

‘It’s been a crazy experience and I’m still very young. I hope I have many more to live.

“It’s definitely made me want to do better. I see the competition and I know where I can be. It’s given me a lot of inspiration to come back.”
