‘Team effort’: Perrottet goes to the savage state of the rain

While Sydney lay in the sun for most of Tuesday afternoon before thunderstorms hit parts of the city, more than 7,000 people remained under emergency warnings across NSW.

Prime Minister Dominic Perrottet made his way to Moree in the north of the state, where about 4,000 people had been affected by evacuations and flooding.

“It has been a team effort at a very difficult time,” said the prime minister from Moree on Tuesday afternoon.

“It is in difficult times that our great communities come together…I have met so many people today who have left their homes to take care of other people’s homes. Well, that’s the great Australian way.”

Despite many cities in the state proceeding to clean up when the weather is in their favour, emergency minister Steph Cooke warned that the danger of flooding will loom in the coming days.

Flooding continues in many towns, including Gunnedah and Narrabri, and the Snowy Mountains town of Cooma experienced flash flooding Tuesday morning following a local storm that isolated homes and forced road closures.

It was a familiar story to some, as parts of devastated Lismore had to evacuate Monday night due to rising waters and as of 5pm Tuesday, more than 120 warnings from the NSW SES remained in effect.

With questions looming over a government buyback scheme in the flood-affected northern rivers area, the prime minister urged people to remain patient and assured residents an announcement would be made to the federal government soon.
