A NSW teacher has been charged with assault after footage of a classroom fight surfaced online.

Police were called to Maitland Grossmann Secondary School, in the Hunter region, on Tuesday afternoon following reports that a student had been assaulted by a teacher.

“The teenager was assessed on scene by paramedics from NSW Ambulance, however he was not physically injured,” police said on Wednesday.

The 62-year-old teacher was arrested at 9:30 p.m. and later charged with common assault.

Opposition leader Chris Minns was asked about the incident after video posted on social media showed the classroom fight.

Police were called to Maitland Grossmann Secondary School, north-west of Newcastle, around 2pm on Tuesday with the entire incident captured on video.

“I don’t know the circumstances,” Minns told Nine’s Today on Wednesday.

‘Teachers have never been under so much pressure.

Discipline at school is important. Part of that is ensuring that when teachers make a call to principals, they are backed up.

‘If there are examples of that in NSW education, we have to make sure teachers are supported.’

The teacher was given a conditional bond to appear in Maitland Local Court on April 6.

The Department of Education is investigating the incident.

Disturbing footage of the alleged assault shows the teacher throwing balls of paper at the student before saying ‘come on buddy’ and grabbing him by the neck.

The teacher then dumped the student on his desk, but other students immediately intervened before the situation escalated further.

The teacher can be seen throwing balls of paper at a student from a close distance before saying 'come on buddy' and grabbing his neck.

A round of arguments broke out between the teacher and the students with several children yelling at the teacher to leave the student alone while he yelled at them to put their phones away.

A student then threw a desk at the teacher when the bell rang, causing several startled students to run out of the classroom.

The video ends with what appears to be the teacher beating the student who was grabbed by the neck after dragging him to the front of the classroom.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Maitland Grossmann High School for comment.
