An Alabama high school English teacher has died by apparent suicide two days after she was arrested for allegedly having sex with two students.

Leslie Gillespie, 44, was found dead at her Hillsboro home around 11:30 am Saturday, authorities said. AL.com.

“It appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” said Lawrence County coroner Scott Norwood.

An autopsy on Gillespie’s body was due to take place at the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences.

Gillespie taught English at RA Hubbard High School in North Courtland, a small town near the Tennessee River in the northern part of the state.

The apparent suicide occurred a day after authorities announced a criminal charge against Gillespie for allegedly having sex with two students.

Gillespie was arrested Thursday for what authorities describe as sexual contact she had with two students aged 15 and 16 in her classroom after school sometime in September 2020.

She was incarcerated in Lawrence County Jail and charged with two counts of school employees committing a sexual act with a student under age 19 and one count of second-degree rape and second-degree sodomy.

Gillespie was released on $60,000 bail later on Thursday.

Following Gillespie’s arrest, Lawrence County Superintendent Jon Bret Smith issued a statement saying, “The Lawrence County School District has been notified that an employee has been arrested.

“Our school district treats these kinds of situations with the utmost care.

District leaders are investigating this matter and will support law enforcement if they do the same.

“While the district cannot provide specific details at this time, we would like to emphasize that nothing is more important to Lawrence County Schools than the safety and well-being of our students.

“The district will work hard and diligently to resolve this situation.”
