Taylor Swift’s ‘Copyright Disposal’ Lawsuit Dropped… The Day Before Her 33rd Birthday
11-time Grammy winner Taylor Swift — who turns 33 this Tuesday — received an early birthday present Monday when US District Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald dismissed her copyright lawsuit over her 2014 song “Shake It Off.”
A trial that was set to begin on January 17 was canceled when the songwriters — Nate Butler and Sean ‘Seb’ Hall — agreed to dismiss the case with prejudice, meaning it could not be reconsidered, according to NBC News.

US District Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald dismissed the case in 2018, but US Circuit Judges John B. Owens, Andrew D. Horowitz, and Kenneth K. Lee of the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit reversed the ruling in 2019.
Taylor wrote in a court declaration that she had never heard Playas Gon’ Play, which used the same public domain phrases — “players will play” and “haters will hate” — as Shake It Off.
“I remember hearing phrases about playing gamers and hating haters that other kids said together as they went to school in Wyoming Hills and to high school in Hendersonville,” Swift wrote in August.
These phrases were similar to other commonly used sayings such as “Don’t hate the play, hate the game”, “Take a cool pill” and “Say it, don’t spray it”.
