A python was caught on camera digesting a huge meal, making people wonder what it ate to be so full.

The image went viral after being shared on the Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers Facebook page.

‘Thank you to one of our followers, Paul, for sending this amazing photo of a python with a belly full of food.

‘They think it was a large possum that had eaten the snake. The snake was very happy resting for the next few days digesting its large meal.’

‘What did this snake eat? Wowzas,’ they asked their followers on Tuesday.

Paul believes the snake caught, killed and ate a very large possum, but many Australians thought the lump was too large and suggested it could be a dog or cat.

“If it swallowed a possum, it must have been a disaster,” said one Australian.

“That would be a big possum, more like a small dog,” added a second.

Sunshine Coast snake catchers warned that “it’s that time of year when snakes are looking for food a lot.”

The end of summer is when pythons are most active as hunters, as they eat a lot before winter, when their metabolism slows down and they stop eating.

This active period means that they can hunt during the day, although they are normally nocturnal.

This poses a threat to possums, which are usually asleep during the day.

Although pythons generally prey on small animals such as opossums, cats, and dogs, they rarely forage on humans and only attack when they feel threatened.

Pythons are especially active in late summer, eating as much as they can before winter, when their metabolism drops along with the temperature (pictured, carpet python).
