Three young people were killed when a vehicle left the road and overturned near Tarago, about 40 kilometres south of Goulburn in regional New South Wales, on Sunday afternoon.

One of the first responders to the scene of a horrific single-vehicle crash that claimed the lives of three young people recalled the driver’s heartbreaking screams as his girlfriend died.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Bungendore and Collector Roads near Tarago, about 40km south of Goulburn in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales at about 1.10pm on Sunday after reports that a silver Hyundai SUV had left the road and rolled over before coming to rest on its roof in the grass.

Three passengers, two women aged 18 and 20 and a man aged 20, were trapped inside the vehicle while the driver managed to escape the wreckage without help.

First responders who arrived at the harrowing scene pulled the trapped passengers out of the scene and began CPR.

The three victims, who were from the New South Wales south coast, died at the scene despite desperate efforts to revive them.

One person who responded told Daily Mail Australia about the horrific sights and sounds he encountered and will never forget.

“The boy and girl were already out of the car when the police arrived at the scene,” he recalled.

“We were trying to do CPR on them, but it wasn’t working. It was horrible.”

The responder recalled that the male driver, in his 20s, was yelling at them to help his dying girlfriend out of the car and that he will never forget his screams.

“A girl was still trapped in the car – the driver’s girlfriend. I can still hear her screams.”

The driver suffered minor injuries and escaped the accident without help.

He was flown to Canberra Hospital for treatment and mandatory tests.

As of Tuesday morning, he remained hospitalized in stable condition and had not yet been questioned by police. No charges had yet been filed against him.

He and his three passengers are understood to have been returning home from Canberra, where they had attended a 21st birthday party.

Hume Police District Commander, Superintendent Linda Bradbury He described the accident scene as “horrible” for rescuers.

“Any fatality that the police respond to is a confrontation,” he said. Goulburn Post.
