The owner of the tanning salon left ‘disgusted’ after a customer urinated on a tanning bed during a six-minute session
- Owner of The Tanning Room said customers peeing on tanning beds is “normal.”
- Odelle Burney said this comes at the expense of the salon – deep cleaning
A tanning salon owner was “really disgusted” after discovering that a customer had urinated on a tanning bed during a session of just six minutes.
The Tanning Room in Lees, Oldham, was forced to seal and give a thorough clean of one of its rooms on Thursday when a tanning bed was found drenched in urine.
This was the fifth such incident in a decade, Odelle Burney claimed, adding that it seemed to be ‘normal’ at tanning shops.
After the incident, she posted on the salon’s Facebook account, “Just letting you know we know who you are who just got weed on bed 3!!!
“We checked the cameras and you are really disgusted! Anyone doing this in one of our tanning beds will be immediately banned from the store. Thank you.’
Salon owner Odelle Burney (pictured) said customers peeing on tanning beds is “normal.”
Odelle explained that the urine was first discovered after the customer “stumbled nicely” out of the store and a member of staff started using the tanning bed after finishing work.
She told the Manchester Evening News: ‘She put her tokens in, opened the bed door and then slipped on the mat because it was so wet. Then she began to notice the smell and lifted the mat to discover what had happened.
‘Peeing on a tanning bed with electricity and high voltage is pretty crazy to me – why do people think it’s acceptable to do that?
‘We have a staff toilet and we let customers use it for medical reasons or in emergencies, but we are also opposite a library with a public toilet. It’s not like there weren’t options.’
Odelle was off work on Thursday, but came into the salon to help clean up and thoroughly clean the tanning booth.
“We had to throw out all the internal and external mats and thoroughly clean and sanitize everything,” she explained.
“We had to order new mats and close the room for at least half an hour, so we lost money to close it.
‘I could do without it, to be honest. It’s an extra thing we have to deal with.’

There have been five toilet incidents since Odelle owns The Tanning Room
The customer has now been identified, thanks to CCTV, and is not allowed to return to The Tanning Room.
“We have CCTV, but we don’t have any cameras in the cabins at all,” she said. “We’re just monitoring the entrances and everyone going in and out.
They are not regular customers. Obviously if she comes back in I have to pull her aside and block her. I really hope she doesn’t come back, because then I won’t be ashamed of having to.’
She added: ‘It’s strange, I don’t know what it is, but it seems to be very common in tanning shops.
“Maybe it’s just from people coming in from the cold and then they’re hit by the heat and they can’t control their bladder, but it’s certainly not the first time it’s happened – we’ve had about five incidents in a decade time.’
After a message about the incident on social media, reactions poured in from other customers.
One of them said, “Wow, I’m sure it wouldn’t be a problem if they asked if they could go to the bathroom.”
Another simply replied, “Seriously… nahhhhhh.”
The Tanning Room posted a follow up comment adding: ‘So just to let the lady know we know who you are and if you have the guts to come back into our salon we will politely pull you aside and let you know you’re banned! Thank you.’
