A musical about televangelist Tammy Faye will hit Broadway in the 2024-2025 season, with music by Elton John.
In addition to music from John, the musical, Tammy Fayewith lyrics by Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters, and a book by James Graham, the playwright of Ink, which followed the rise of Rupert Murdoch to power in Britain, Rupert Goold, who headed Ink And King Charles III, directs.
The musical comes to Broadway after making its world premiere at London’s Almeida Theater in fall 2022, starring Katie Brayben as Faye and Andrew Rannells as her husband and TV co-host, Jim Bakker.
Casting, exact dates for the Broadway run and a theater have not yet been announced, but the production says it will appear in a Dutch theater.
This production complements John’s several other compositions for the stage, which he has also recorded The Lion King, Aida, Billy Elliot the Musical, Lestat And The devil wears Prada, which had its world premiere in Chicago in July 2022.
John’s production company, Rocket Stage, Greene Light Stage and James L. Nederlander produce the Broadway series Tammy Faye.
The musical features choreography by Lynne Page; orchestrations by Tom Deering and Mark Dickman; and music supervision, arrangements and additional music by Tom Deering.
The production will feature scenic design by Bunny Christie, costume design by Katrina Lindsay, lighting design by Neil Austin, sound design by Bobby Aitken and video design by Finn Ross.
This is the latest project exploring Faye’s life, following the 2021 film, Tammy Faye’s eyeswith Jessica Chastain and Andrew Garfield.
