He recently returned home to Scotland after admitting he “missed the smell of rain.”

Now Ewan McGregor has been forced to submit retrospective plans to renovate his “water-damaged” £2million Scottish home and install CCTV cameras.

The Trainspotting and Star Wars actor came under fire earlier this year after he was accused of carrying out “unauthorised” work on a C-listed 18th century mansion near Perth.

Enforcement details on Perth and Kinross Council’s planning website yesterday continued to state that the outcome of this investigation was “pending consideration”.

The 53-year-old actor has submitted a formal proposal for a series of renovations that, according to the application, have already been completed.

This includes the installation of CCTV cameras, roof repairs and renovation of parts of the property’s vast interior.

The reason given by agents McKenzie Strickland Associates for the work being completed before the application was submitted was that it “was carried out before the applicant moved in”.

The agents say: ‘Our clients purchased the property in May 2023. It was evident that the previous owners had not decorated the property for some time.

‘The overall paint was yellowed and the wallpaper was peeling in several areas due to water damage due to blocked gutters etc.

Therefore, most of the work carried out in the house was decorative, including painting, wallpapering and sanding floors.’

Land Registry documents show the Golden Globe and Emmy Award winner bought the mansion in the Carse of Gowrie area in May last year for £200,000 above the asking price.

The council has since granted McGregor permission to build a replacement garage and create a new master bedroom and bathroom.

Set in over 18 acres of grounds and gardens, the ten-bedroom property is just a 35-minute drive from where he grew up in Crieff.

The actor, whose most recent screen role sees him playing Count Rostov in A Gentleman in Moscow, alongside his wife Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Anna Urbanova, spoke last month of his delight at returning to Scotland, telling the magazine Architectural Digest how it had felt like a ‘pull’ to return home when he reached fifty.

McGregor added: “I never saw it coming, it’s strange.”

“You just get to an age where it’s time to go home.”

According to Perth and Kinross Council’s website, listed building consent “is required for any internal or external alteration, extension or demolition of a listed building which may affect its character as a building or structure of architectural or historic interest.”

He adds: “It is a crime to carry out work on a listed building without consent.”

Offenders can be fined up to £50,000 for failing to comply with an enforcement notice.
