Take These 5 Steps, If You Can’t Afford College

College is the first step for every person in realizing life dreams. We all go to college with the hope of becoming valuable specialists in our chosen field and then receiving salaries above the US average. But to go to college, you sometimes need good exam results and a stable financial background because you will have to invest large sums of money for your education.

Since colleges in the United States are paid, many, due to ignorance, give up their dreams and look for work where they do not need to have a higher education. But did you know that there are so many ways to go to college if you can’t cover all the costs yourself? In this article, we’ll walk you through the steps to help you achieve your long-awaited goal.

1. Look for scholarships, grants to help you cover all or part of your college expenses

Most colleges in the US provide their scholarship programs for American and international students. Often, only part of the tuition is covered. But in some cases, the educational institution covers the entire cost and pays students monthly allowances for their expenses. However, such programs are often carried out by the most prestigious colleges, such as Harvard, MIT, and Stanford. Most scholarships are very competitive, so the chance of getting a scholarship depends on your entry results and motivation.

 2. Consider public colleges/universities first

Public universities are much cheaper than private universities, so this step will save you a lot of money. However, some public colleges may provide substandard education, so you must first research alumni and current student feedback about the college.

 3. Go to college abroad

Americans rarely consider the option of studying abroad, fearing the extra costs of living as well as distance from their families and friends. However, many European countries provide ample tuition opportunities. In some countries, like Germany and Norway, education is free or very cheap, even in English, like in Italy, Portugal, Eastern European countries, etc. Moreover, you will be able to work while studying at the university, which will allow you to cover living expenses. Distance is only a matter of time until you adapt to the new environment. But there is also one difficult point here. You can, of course, find tuition in English. However, you will significantly increase your chances of admission by learning the country’s national language where you wish to study. The best option might be to spend a year studying the language. For example, German with intensive study can be learned up to level C1 (advanced) in 12 months.

4. Student loan is also a solution to the problem

If you have already chosen college but were unable to get a scholarship, one of the main methods of covering your expenses is applying for a student loan. However, there are essential points you need to know before taking this step:

  1. There are two types of student loans: federal and private. Apply first for federal loans that the US Department of Education issues. Although in these loans, you will have a lower interest rate, inherently, you will need to return less money than in the case of private loans. Apply for private loans only if federal loans cannot fully cover all of your expenses.

  2. Be sure to pay attention to things like your debt repayment plan, interest rate, loan delay, and forbearance conditions. Find out in what cases you can stop repaying the loan or be late with a payment.

  3. In some cases, your future employer will help you pay off your student loan. You also need to clarify this point if you already have a place of work.

5. Postpone your college entrance

Often, future students are in a hurry to enroll, or their parents push them to do so, which is a big mistake. Instead, you can take a break for 1-2 years, save up the required amount of money, and wholly decide which college and specialty you want to apply for. Also, during this time, you will be able to learn a new language, which will help you study abroad.

Going to college is an essential step in your life that will decide your entire future destiny. Therefore, you need to carefully choose in which college and in which specialty you see yourself. You can always find money, but it will be impossible to return your time. Hence, read all possible steps carefully and choose the one that works best for you.
