Speaking with journalists after winning his first Oscar for the best adapted scenario, Jojo Rabbit and Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi had other things on his mind. Asked what he thought writers should demand in the next round of conversations with producers, Waititi raised Apple’s controversial laptop keyboards.
“Apple needs to fix those keyboards,” he said. “They are impossible to write down – they have gotten worse. It makes me want to go back to PCs. Because PC keyboards make the bounce-back much better for your fingers. Hands up, who still uses a PC? You know “I’m talking about. It’s a much better keyboard. Those Apple keyboards are terrible.”

“I have some shoulder problems,” Waititi continued. “I have OOS [Occupational Overuse Syndrome, a term used in New Zealand for RSI] – I don’t know what you call it here, stuff like this here (gestures to arm), that tendon that goes down from your forearm into the thumb? You know what I’m talking about if you ever write. And what happens is that you open the laptop and it is like this (makes an uncomfortable bent laptop post) – we have to fix those keyboards. The WGA must intervene and actually do something. “
It is unclear whether Waititi has used Apple’s new 16-inch MacBook Pro, which replaces the unreliable and superficial ‘butterfly’ keyboard with a new design that is more comfortable for all accounts to type on. But the butterfly keyboards have been shipped on laptops for nearly five years now, so hopefully Apple will get the message and kill this once and for all this year.
