Gareth Southgate wouldn’t want to take the Manchester United job if he leaves England, or at least that’s what one former England manager thinks.

United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has made Southgate his number one target to replace Erik ten Hag and is confident of attracting him, according to the daily star.

Southgate insisted he will refuse to speak to any club while he is in charge of the Three Lions and the FA are keen to retain him until 2026 on a new contract.

And Sam Allardyce believes that even if Southgate left the national team job, he would hardly jump to the Red Devils bench.

“I’m not so sure that if Gareth (Southgate) left the England job he would want the Manchester United job, he would want a break!” Allardyce said. William Hill.

“He’s already feeling the pressure in England, which is incredible at times, and yes, it’s okay in the middle periods, but when it builds up, it really builds up.”

‘The difference with United is that it happens every day, every week, every month, every year – the intrusion never ends. I’m not sure he would want that after everything he has done for England. He certainly wouldn’t want to jump into it right away.

Southgate has been in charge of England since 2016 and has guided them to three major tournaments so far.

Ratcliffe may keep Ten Hag in charge of United, and the 4-3 FA Cup quarter-final victory over Liverpool certainly helped his cause, but every game is a final for the Dutchman from now.

He Yo have claimed that Ratcliffe and Sir Dave Brailsford plan to keep him in charge next season, or at least wait until Dan Ashworth joins as sporting director before making a decision, but anything could happen.

Allardyce added: “I think the speculation about Gareth Southgate leaving for Manchester United comes from the new owners who have arrived.

“Sir Jim Ratcliffe has arrived and there is enough pressure on Manchester United as a manager, without that constant nagging in the back of your mind wondering if Jim is really considering Gareth Southgate.

I don’t know if they sat down with Erik ten Hag and said, “Look, this is not going to happen.”

Allardyce managed England for one match in 2016 (a 1-0 injury-time win against Slovenia) but was sacked after 67 days following an undercover investigation by the Daily Telegraph.

He was the highest-paid international football manager in the world and was exposed in a secretly recorded video as he tried to boost his salary by promoting tips on how to circumvent strict player transfer rules.

He also mocked his predecessor Roy Hodgson’s speech impediment, calling him “Woy” and branded the FA “all about making money”.
