Transport safety officials have issued an urgent recall for almost 2,000 Mercedes-Benz vehicles, warning that a manufacturing defect in some models of the luxury brand poses a serious risk to the safety of road users.

Some of the company’s AMG GT, C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, SL, CLE, EQE and EQS models were recalled Monday following the discovery of a manufacturing defect.

“Vehicle management systems connected to the fuse box may fail,” the Australian Department of Transport said in its recall alert.

“If this occurs, it could result in a sudden loss of motive power and/or vehicle fire.

“A sudden loss of motive power while driving, or a vehicle fire, could increase the potential risk of an accident, causing serious injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users, bystanders and material damage.”

The annual range for 1,983 affected vehicles is 2023-2024.

Consumers are advised to check their vehicle identification numbers to see if they have been affected and, if so, to contact their nearest authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer to have the fuse box replaced.

Replacement will be free.

Mercedes-Benz is a leading luxury brand and its S-Class sedans now embody the luxury driving experience, with the refined cars selling for over $200,000.

Mercedes-Benz has been contacted for comment.
