Mats Hummels punished the penalty awarded to him during Borussia Dortmund's draw

Mats Hummels has taken to social media to complain about the penalty awarded to him during Borussia Dortmund’s draw against PSV Eindhoven.

Former PSV player Donyell Malen put the visitors ahead during the first half of the first leg of the Champions League round of 16, but a controversial penalty came after the break.

Following a quick counter-attack by the hosts, Hummels slid in to try to dispossess Malik Tillman, before the German caught the defender on the ankle with his follow-through, causing Srdan Jovanovic to concede a penalty.

Hummels was furious at the decision at the time, with Luuk de Jong equalizing from the penalty spot, and after the match, took X (formerly Twitter) to explain his anger over the call.

Hummels wrote: ‘Twitter is waiting for you. Twitter understands it. What a joke of a penalty against us. Again! “I can’t believe there can be decisions like today or against Chelsea or PSG with VAR.”

Speaking to TNT Sports after the gameExpert Glen Hoddle agreed that the decision was harsh and felt that the 50-50 decision should have been reviewed in the monitors.

Hoddle said: “He touches the ball for me, puts it in there.” It’s a bit of a follow-through that gets Tillman down. And that’s where the referee’s angle is.

“I think they should send him to the screens to take a look himself.”

Fellow TNT pundit Joleon Lescott agreed, adding: “I don’t think anyone should make the decision for him.”

‘This (angle), it didn’t look like there was any contact. It seems that she has tried to jump and avoid him. I definitely feel like he touches the ball enough for that not to be a penalty.

“I think if you look at it from other angles, you might see it differently.”

Experts felt that referee Srdan Jovanovic might have changed his mind if he had seen it again.
