  • Brand promotion is back every Tuesday until September 5
  • This is the first free ‘Taco Tuesday’ since the company settled a trademark lawsuit

Taco Bell is giving away free Dorito Loco Tacos every week through September 5, as part of its first “Taco Tuesday” promotion since settling a trademark lawsuit with Wyoming-based Taco John’s last month. .

The fast food chain rival insisted he owned the rights to the phrase – but backed out of his claim in July, saying: ‘It’s just not worth the amount of money it would take to defend her.”

To celebrate, Taco Bell has relaunched its weekly giveaway. Mexican food lovers can walk into any outlet (as long as it’s not in New Jersey) and ask for the free snack at the counter.

They also have the option to pre-order on the app or website with a special code.

There is a limit of one Dorito Loco Taco per customer, and no purchase is necessary.

Taco Bell first filed a petition with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in May to void the “Taco Tuesday” trademark owned by Taco John’s since 1989.

NBA superstar LeBron James even joined the campaign in an ad poking fun at the issue titled “Taco Bleep,” which debuted on May 22.

“Taco Bell thinks ‘Taco Tuesday’ is essential for everyone’s Tuesday,” the petition said.

“To deprive anyone of saying ‘Taco Tuesday’ – whether it’s Taco Bell or whoever provides tacos to the world – is to deprive the world of the sun itself.”

Taco John’s waived the trademark just two months after the filing, citing legal costs as a primary factor in its decision.

Its CEO, Jim Creel, said the estimated $1 million it would cost to tackle the problem would be better off going “to a good cause”.

Taco Bell may have hinted at a free “Taco Tuesday” event in its post on X (formerly known as Twitter) on the day news of the settlement went public on July 18.

The restaurant chain also credited Taco John’s with “doing the right thing” in conceding the lawsuit.

It’s unclear how often the free “Taco Tuesday” events will take place after the current promotion ends in September.

Meanwhile, Gregory’s restaurant and bar in New Jersey will continue to hold the “Taco Tuesday” brand in the state, which means Taco Bell outlets in New Jersey will not participate in the giveaway.

There has been no communication between Taco Bell officials and Taco John since the two chains entered into their agreement.

However, Taco John’s invited LeBron James to donate “all fees he received from Taco Bell’s latest multi-million dollar Taco Tuesday ad campaign to CORE (Children of Restaurant Employees)”.
