A father who could not walk more than two meters without stopping competes in City2Surf less than a year after undergoing a double lung transplant.

Adam Wells' lung capacity was 18 percent before he underwent the lung transplant that saved his life ten months ago.

He does not know the age, sex or name of his organ donor, but said he was "incredibly grateful to them."

"I could not walk two meters without stopping twice," Mr. Wells told the Sydney Morning Herald.

– Imagine having someone's hands around your throat and they keep tightening more and more for five years.

In 2003, the father of two was diagnosed with sarcoidosis, an inflammatory disease that affects the lungs.

Sarcoidosis can usually be treated, but in a case of horror, Mr. Wells developed bronchiectasis and severe pulmonary hypertension.

In 2016 he became ill with influenza and spent five days in a coma.

At this point, his lung capacity was 18 percent and he was placed on a waiting list for a lung transplant.

The father knew that "his time was running out" before he was called for the transplant last year.

"Someone has given me a second chance in life and I'm going to make the most of it."

Six days after the successful operation he began his pulmonary rehabilitation, started boxing, lifted weights and traveled 2,300 kilometers since November.

Mr Wells will be one of more than 80,000 participants at City2Surf this year. The course starts in Hyde Park on Sunday morning and ends in Bondi Beach.
