A missing teenager who drowned off the coast of a popular Sydney beach is remembered by friends and family as a young man who enjoyed the outdoors.
Ivan Korolev, 18, went swimming with two friends at Freshwater Beach around 8 p.m. Saturday night.
But the pair called police when they lost track of the teen and he failed to return to shore at around 8:15 p.m.
Emergency services launched an extensive search and rescue mission, working through the night to find Mr. Korolev.
Local police, the Marine Area Command, Surf Life Saving NSW, Marine Rescue, Polar and the Toll Ambulance Rescue Helicopter searched the area from North Curl Curl headland along the coastline to Bluefish Point and further out to sea.
Naval officers patrolled the water Sunday night while police scoured the beach.

The search resumed early Sunday morning, when the young man’s body was found in the water around 9:25 am.
