An intense heatwave will sweep through much of Sydney hours after the mercury soared to nearly 50C in Victoria for the first time since Australia’s Black Summer.
Weatherzone senior meteorologist Thomas Hough said temperatures will rise to 40 degrees in Sydney’s western suburbs and 33 degrees in the CBD on Tuesday.
Temperatures are expected to soar to 42C in Penrith, 42C in Richmond, 40C in Liverpool and Blacktown and 38C in Parramatta.
For the first time since the Black Summer of 2019-2020, the mercury in Victoria peaked at 47.1C in the small north-west Victoria town of Walpeup on Monday.
Melbourne also suffered sweltering heat as temperatures hit 38.1C just before 3pm.
However, forecasters say much-needed relief is on the way.
“A southerly change is expected to arrive between 6pm and 8pm in Sydney, bringing significantly colder temperatures on Wednesday, with the maximum forecast for the city around 20 degrees,” he said. Mr Hough told Daily Mail Australia.
“The heat is being caused by warm northerly winds from inland Australia moving over the southeast of the country, ahead of a cold front and approaching the southerly shift.”

As New South Wales burns under heatwave conditions, southeast Queensland was devastated by a slow-moving rain bomb with more than 140mm of rain dumped on Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay on Monday night.
Kallangur, in the Moreton Bay region, received 70mm of rain in just one hour.
