Australia will be hit by a heatwave this week with temperatures in almost all states and territories rising to 40C or higher.

The mercury will hit 46C in the outback town of Birdsville on the Queensland-Northern Territory border on Wednesday.

Windorah in central west Queensland and Thargomindah in the southwest are forecast to reach highs of 45C on Wednesday.

The Bureau of Meteorology also issued a severe heatwave warning for the Central West and Northern Goldfields regions of the state until Friday.

Brisbane will not be spared from the sweltering temperatures with the city hitting highs of 36C on Wednesday.

The mercury will drop slightly to 33°C on Thursday before returning to 36°C on Friday.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s Angus Hines said temperatures across southeast Queensland are slightly warmer than usual.

‘There are some really hot days ahead…really warm nights too, around 20 degrees overnight. “You have to take care of yourself: stay out of the sun, stay hydrated…don’t forget your animals, your pets, your livestock,” Mr Hines said. NCA Newswire.

The extreme conditions will also affect residents on the other side of the country, with the remote central WA town of Warburton set to swelter in 44C heat (heat map pictured).

Scorching temperatures will also hit several parts of New South Wales, with Nyngan, located in the state’s central region, reaching highs of 43C.

Cobar, Narromine and Coonamble will also reach temperatures of 41C.

Sydney’s CBD will reach high temperatures of 35C on Wednesday with the possibility of an afternoon thunderstorm, while western Sydney is forecast to reach 39C.

Harbor City will get a cool change on Thursday and Friday with expected highs of 25C and mostly cloudy conditions expected for the weekend.

The remote town of Warburton in central WA will be sweltering in 44C heat with highs of 45C expected for the rest of the week.

Perth will be partly cloudy on Wednesday with highs of 37C before the mercury warms again on Thursday to hit highs of 39C. The city sweltered during a muggy 43C day on Monday and highs of 29 were forecast. ° C for the weekend.

Meanwhile, tennis fans will enjoy ideal weather in Melbourne on Saturday and Sunday with highs of 25C and 29C predicted for the Australian Oepn finals. A high of 21C is expected across the city on Wednesday with a chance of showers.
