The soggy conditions are the aftermath of former Tropical Cyclone Megan combined with a trough of low pressure stretching across the NT and Queensland.
The coastal trough is expected to affect areas of the southeast coast, Wide Bay and Fraser Coast over the next 48 to 72 hours.
Experts say some isolated falls in the region could total 200 mm.
A shower or two is forecast for Brisbane next long weekend, with temperatures reaching a high of 28C.
Melbourne
The weather in Melbourne is expected to be warm and sunny over the long weekend with temperatures reaching 30C before a cool change on Sunday.
Temperatures are expected to drop to 21C on Monday, as the northerly wind shifts to the south, with a chance of showers.
In central Victoria, including Melbourne, about 1mm of rain is forecast and the central and eastern districts, including Gippsland, will receive 5mm.
The cold change will begin in the west of the state before moving east.

Sydney
The Easter long weekend in Harbor City will be dry and a little cooler than other eastern states as temperatures remain stuck in the 20s.
Some scattered showers are expected on Good Friday morning, although this is expected to clear up on Saturday and Sunday.
The rains will return on Monday and will affect the extreme west and north of the state.
Popular holiday destination Byron Bay in northern New South Wales will receive rain over the long weekend with temperatures reaching just 25C.
ACT
People heading to the country’s capital for Easter will be greeted with cool, dry weather, before the mercury rises to 27C on Saturday.
However, the ACT will also receive rainfall of up to 10mm on Monday.
Noosa, Queensland, to receive up to 15mm of rain on Thursday ahead of the long weekend
Adelaide
Those in Adelaide are in for a warm but mostly clear Easter weekend, with daytime temperatures reaching 31C on Saturday.
A cool change will arrive on Monday, with forecasts for highs of 22C and rain.
Perth
Australians on the west coast will have a warm but cloudy long Easter weekend.
Temperatures will reach 30°C on Saturday and 31°C on Sunday.
Hamilton Island will also receive rain as a 7000km rain band approaches Queensland
hobart
The weather in Hobart this long weekend will remain cool and dry with temperatures reaching a high of 23C on both Friday and Saturday.
As in most of the country, an interesting change is coming on Monday.
Darwin
Darwin is forecast to be a wetter, wetter and stormier Easter, with showers and thunderstorms expected.
The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast up to 10mm of rain each day of the long weekend before skies clear on Monday.
Temperatures will reach 34C before falling to 24C on Monday.
