Millions of Australians are being warned to prepare for heavy rain and thunderstorms as a wet weather system moves across the country’s east, ending a sweltering heatwave.
A cold shift has hit parts of southern Australia earlier in the week, before sweeping up the east coast late on Monday.
It comes after millions of Australians suffered from hot, dry weather as temperatures hit the 30s and 40s in much of the east of the country.
Weatherzone explained that the most extensive and widespread rainfall is forecast for Tuesday, stretching from Albury east to Bourke in New South Wales and as far as Thargomindah in southern Queensland.
Storms are also expected daily from Tuesday to Saturday in the east of the country, with significant activity in the most populated areas.
The spell of wet weather is forecast to contract further inland into New South Wales and southeast Queensland on Wednesday.
Heavy rain is expected “along the east coast” from Friday into Saturday.
Weatherzone explained that the wet weather would hit a large area from Melbourne to New South Wales and up to the Queensland coast.
A trough of low pressure was set to cause a “significant drop in temperature”, a “gust of southerly winds” and heavy rain in parts of Victoria and New South Wales.
While there is uncertainty with weather modules about how far inland the wet weather will travel, Weatherzone said it would affect the eastern half of New South Wales and Victoria.
Miriam Bradbury, from the Bureau of Meteorology, said a trough of low pressure was expected to bring a “significant drop in temperature” and a “burst of southerly winds” to residents along the east coast.
Bradbury said the cold shift could bring rain, severe storms and flash flooding, with the heaviest rain expected in northern and central eastern New South Wales.
“Severe storms may bring heavy rainfall which could lead to flash flooding during the course of this afternoon and evening,” he said.
‘As we get closer to Tuesday, we will see the risk of storms become a little more extensive in the central and eastern parts of the state.
“With thunderstorms possible across much of the east coast, severe thunderstorms will once again be a risk, but will mainly cover parts of the NSW hinterland, western slopes and central ranges.”
Bradbury added that severe storms were forecast for Tuesday, with damaging winds and possible large hail.
He said the wet and wild weather was likely to continue in New South Wales until Friday as the trough remained close to the state’s coast.
Showers and thunderstorms are also forecast for Darwin, Brisbane and Canberra.
