A swimmer was torn apart by a monster shark off the Great Barrier Reef on Monday afternoon.

A man in his twenties was attacked when he swam northwest of the island just after 5 p.m.

He sustained serious leg injuries in the attack and was transferred to Gladstone Hospital in critical condition.

After the attack, a rescue helicopter with paramedics for critical care was dispatched from Rockhampton.

A paramedic was dropped on the beach and taken to the victim on a boat before both were hoisted back to the helicopter.

The man reportedly sat on a boat moored offshore from North West Island.

The incident is the third shark attack in the area in just over three months.

A nine-year-old girl was bitten on the back of her leg by a suspected lemon shark off the island on January 8, while a 30-year-old man was bitten by a scoop shark off the island on December 30.
