He added: “They said, ‘It’s Hobson’s Choice, if you don’t have surgery you have a one in three chance of suffering a brain haemorrhage, being paralyzed or having a stroke.’

“If you have surgery, you have a one in 10 chance of the same thing happening during the operation.”

Susannah’s condition is usually created surgically or appears as a result of a congenital or genetic abnormality.

She said: ‘I had a health problem and a pretty major operation. It was very rare that I had a leak: the arteries were bleeding into the capillaries, trapping the spinal cord and affecting my brain.’

It was causing symptoms such as tingling in his arm, as well as swelling of his left eye and tinnitus.

Last year, Susannah spoke for the first time about the terrifying incident when she revealed she was rushed to hospital after struggling with a “knockout arm”.

The presenter took to Instagram to share that she had been put on a drip after the health scare, which turned out to be “more serious” than she initially thought.

Fortunately, Susannah assured her followers that the health problem was “already fixed” and praised the “magnificent” NHS and neurosurgeons for looking after her.

Susannah previously revealed she suffers from hearing loss and shared details of her devastating diagnosis and life-changing treatment in an interview with Mirror.

She spent her entire life in noisy environments, juggling between production studios and live gigs, but it was the inability to hear birdsong that alarmed her.

The award-winning author realized she had hearing problems earlier this year, but admitted The problem could have lasted a year and a half.

The famous writer, who lives in the countryside, said that birdsong was one of the most comforting things for her, since suddenly she could no longer hear it.

‘It was a cacophony of noise without clarity or differentiation. That’s when it hit me. Well, that added to my children. [Joe, 23, Esme, 21 and Cece, 18] calling me deaf and getting very frustrated with me,” she said.

Susannah admitted that social situations became increasingly difficult to bear and that the ambient noise was “horrible”.

“I couldn’t hear the person sitting next to me. I had become a fan of reading lips, but if I couldn’t see someone’s face, I had no idea what they were saying. It was embarrassing,” he revealed.

The clothing designer was candid about her “embarrassment” for seeking help with her problem, admitting she had always feared age-related hearing loss.

“There can be a big stigma around wearing hearing aids. I felt I’d better go to the funeral director and order my coffin, it made me feel very old,” Susannah explained.

WHAT CAUSES HEARING LOSS? AND CAN IT BE TREATED?

Hearing loss can be temporary or permanent.

It can also develop gradually with age or appear suddenly.

Hearing loss in only one ear can be caused by wax buildup, infection, or a ruptured eardrum.

Sudden loss in both ears may be due to damage caused by very loud noise or side effects of certain medications.

Gradual hearing loss may be the result of fluid buildup, known as sticky ear; a bone growth, called otosclerosis; or accumulation of skin cells, known as cholesteatoma.

Gradual hearing loss in both ears is usually due to aging or exposure to loud noises over many years.

Sometimes hearing loss gets better on its own.

A wax buildup can also be treated by suctioning it out or softening it with drops.

However, hearing loss can also be permanent, and treatment focuses on making the most of your remaining hearing.

This may involve:

  • Earphones
  • Implants: These are fixed to the skull or placed deep in the ear if hearing aids are not effective.
  • Communicate using sign language or lip reading.

Hearing loss can be prevented by avoiding loud music and using headphones that block out background noise.

Hearing protectors should also be worn if working in a noisy environment, such as a construction site.

And hearing protection should be worn at concerts and other loud events.

But things took a turn when the TV star decided to book an audition test at Boots, finally overcoming the embarrassing stigma.

Recalling the time she took her hearing test, Susannah said she sat in a soundproof booth with headphones on while listening to a continuous beep and only pressed the button when she could hear it.

At first, the famous style consultant was convinced everything had gone well and was pretty sure she was “not deaf,” but there were several tones she had no idea she couldn’t hear.

The test showed that years of breakage and wear, such as listening to music with headphones at very high volume, caused the author to need a hearing aid.

The BBC star surely had a life full of sensational moments, such as when she toured with the Scissor Sisters in the past, where she was often very exposed to speakers as a huge fan of live music.

Despite the initially devastating diagnosis, Susannah admitted hearing aids changed her life forever, describing her Phonak as “transformative” and “comfortable”.

The former fashion journalist joked that the hearing technology looks like ‘NASA’ and that something like that left her speechless only after trying it.

Susannah explained that these types of hearing aids can comfortably become part of your life as they can be worn while swimming or washing your hair, as long as care is taken.

He also said they have built-in Bluetooth, with which he usually listens to music and makes calls, although “the music is not as good as through headphones.”

The television personality also revealed that her eldest daughter admitted that her hearing improved significantly.

Susannah remembered her first test, which was a big noisy party.

The award-winning author revealed that she was, in fact, doing better than many of the people at the party: many were asking to turn down the volume to talk, while for her it was all “perfectly tuned.”

That’s when things took a big turn for Susannah, as she finally began to accept her new accessory.

He felt even better when he realized that his previous embarrassment was so unmotivated, as many of the people around him showed their support and were actually surprised by how “subtle” the technology was.

The writer recalled lifting her hair and asking people if they had noticed “something new” about her, and some mocked her if she “had a piercing.”

The TV star admitted that seeking help for her hearing loss proved to be a game-changer, allowing her to appreciate what she was missing and regain control of her life.

Susannah also urged anyone who notices symptoms of hearing loss to get tested.
