A BMW driver who fatally hit a 30-year-old woman in what witnesses described as a “horrendous” crash is being investigated for possible speeding.
The 38-year-old man collided with the woman on the Surfers Paradise Esplanade at approximately 3.30pm on Thursday.

The BMW driver was also taken to hospital for mandatory tests.
Surfers Paradise resident Leo Rodino said he heard what sounded like an “explosion” at the time of the incident.
“I was in my apartment and I heard gunshots like an explosion,” he said.
“It must have been around the time he hit the girl. I went for a walk and saw the police and knew something was up.”
A witness who saw the accident said the woman was thrown from the scooter.

Witnesses say the crash sounded “like an explosion” and one said he saw the woman doing somersaults in the air.
“It was so horrible, she flew up and it was like she was doing triple somersaults,” the witness told Seven News.
“It appears we are investigating a serious accident where speed was a factor and furthermore, possibly, the scooter rider was not wearing a helmet,” Queensland Police Duty Officer Chris Tritton told Seven News.
‘The message is always that we ask people to slow down and drive according to the conditions.
Police are conducting investigations into the incident.
