Corenswet joins a long list of actors who have played the Man of Steel on the big screen, dating back to a 1948 film series starring Kirk Alyn.
George Reeves starred in the first feature-length Superman film in 1951, but Christopher Reeve played the first true big-screen/major studio Man of Steel in 1978’s Superman.
He would reprise the role in Superman II, Superman III, and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, before parting ways with the franchise.
Reeve’s life was turned upside down in 1995 when he was paralyzed from the neck down after a equestrian accident.
He fell into a coma and died less than a day later, in October 2004, at only 52 years of age.
Since then, Brandon Routh has played Superman in 2006’s Superman Returns and Henry Cavil in 2013’s Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice from 2016 and Justice League from 2017.
Corenswet becomes the next part of Superman’s legacy on the big screen when his new film premieres on July 11, 2025.
Unlike most Superman movies, this one will eschew the traditional ‘origin story’ and focus on the character in his 20s.
The film will kick off Gunn and Safran’s new DC franchise, followed by Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, scheduled for release on June 26, 2026.
