Mario’s big screen animated debut is just around the corner in April. But with a month to go, Nintendo has released another trailer to give a sneak peek at the Super Mario Bros. movie. A special Nintendo Direct took place on Nintendo’s YouTube channel on Thursday to premiere the final trailer.
The trailer showed off more of the movie than we’ve seen before, including the reveal that the plot revolves around Mario and Peach’s quest to rescue Luigi from Bowser’s clutches. There are plenty of references to Mario spin-offs like Super Smash Bros. in the trailer, but the biggest reference is to Mario Kart with everyone racing their way down Rainbow Road, the series’ most famous track.
This is Nintendo’s second Direct entirely dedicated to the Super Mario Bros. movie. In the latest movie-specific Direct, Nintendo unveiled Donkey Kong and talked a bit about its design and how it changed from the games to the movie. This time around, the Direct had a brief appearance from the film’s cast, but mostly focused on the new trailer.
The Super Mario Bros. movie is scheduled for release on April 5 and is a co-production between Nintendo and Universal Studios and Illumination Animation (Minions: The Rise of Gru). The movie stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, and Charlie Day as Luigi, along with many more.
