Christians in a small Texas town celebrate the survival of a holy cross that remains standing despite a fire tearing through the church where it was erected.

The fire destroyed the Balsora Baptist Church in Bridgeport, Texas on Friday, June 17.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but the blaze was so severe that the roof of the church collapsed while firefighters were inside to fight the flames.

In a Facebook announcement, the Wise County Volunteer Fire Department said: “A devastating loss to our community, but a sight to behold.

‘The fire took the structure, but not the cross.

‘A symbol that the building was just that, a building. The church is the congregation, and where 2 or more people gather, there he will be too.’

Firefighters suggested the fire was caused by extreme heat in the region, where temperatures soared above 100F last week.

“Thank you again for the mutual help.

‘Extreme temperatures don’t put a strain on resources and manpower at events like this.

“Churches also pose an inherent danger because of the large span of the shrines and great halls, which makes them very prone to collapse.”

The firefighters who were injured have been treated at local hospitals and are all expected to recover.

The church held a prayer meeting on Sunday.

On Facebook, the municipality celebrated that the cross is still intact.

“The cross that held our prayer request in the sanctuary still stood!

“We praise God that He still answers prayers. We look forward to everything he will do at Balsora Baptist!!!’ Church leaders said.
