Police are investigating a death at a fraternity at Western Kentucky University.

Officers received a call shortly before noon Wednesday at the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity house in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

According to a police report, the student, identified as John Patrick Howard, had been dead for 12 hours after hanging himself in the basement exercise room.

The report said Howard had left a handwritten note on a workout bench and officers determined it appeared to be his handwriting.

The University statement said: “We have been informed of the death of a student that occurred at an off-campus fraternity house.” Police continue to investigate, but at this time no crime is suspected.

‘WKU is working directly with students who may be most impacted by this loss, but we encourage any students in need of counseling to seek support from WKU.

“We express our deepest condolences to the student’s family, loved ones and friends.”

Police at the time said the fraternity had allowed him to stay in the house while he went through family difficulties.
