Sydney’s iconic Crabbe Hole cafe has closed its doors after 17 years after customers were forced to pay a controversial $10 entrance fee.

The cafe has attracted A-list celebrities including Margot Robbie and America Ferrera since opening in 2007.

Owner Andrew Crabbe confirmed the sad news via social media on Wednesday, thanking loyal customers for their patronage.

“End of an era, folks. Thank you for coming out for the past 17 years. It’s been a pleasure serving you all,” Crabbe wrote Wednesday.

The cafe was reportedly forced to introduce $10 fees for customers in a move taken by the site’s owner, Bondi Icebergs Winter Swimming Club.

The fee was reportedly introduced to end customer access to seaside pools.

“I’m sorry I couldn’t resolve the $10 entrance fee issue. It was my downfall in the end,” Crabbe wrote on Facebook.

“They claim that (the taxes) had no effect on my clientele. My figures prove otherwise.”

“I will miss you. Thank you for everything.”

Mr Crabbe told 9NEWS the tariff had led to a 25 per cent drop in customer numbers.

Many have taken to social media to express their sadness at the news.

“This is devastating. Our happy place in Bondi… Icebergs was lucky to have you. An entrance fee affecting access to the cafe definitely changes everything,” one person commented.

“What a loss! The Crabbe Hole was one of my favorite parts of visiting the icebergs… Sadly, it’s typical of the club’s policy… instead of giving back to the community. I hope you start doing something nearby,” wrote another.

“You and Crabbe Hole are an institution. You’re part of what makes Icebergs a community… I hope you find some comfort in knowing that your coffee was a beloved ritual for so many,” said another.

“I’m sorry about the pathetic entrance fee. It was crazy to think it wouldn’t affect the cafe. It’s a loss for them and for us too.”
