The search for a missing swimmer came to a tragic end after his remains washed up on shore nine months later.
Police were notified after a bone was discovered on the shoreline at Stockton Beach, north of Newcastle on August 26.
Forensic tests later confirmed that the bone belonged to a 20-year-old man who disappeared while swimming at the beach on November 26.
Emergency services were dispatched to the beach after reports of bathers struggling to cope with the waves.
Three swimmers were rescued, but one could not be found, prompting an extensive search by water and air.
