A 37-year-old man was arrested on Crown Street in Wollongong at 10.40am yesterday, before being taken into police custody.

The man who was taken to Wollongong police station was later charged with murder.

He has been refused bail and will appear at Wollongong Local Court today.

Earlier, officers along with homicide squad detectives established a crime scene in the area and have since established Strike Force Alleppo to investigate the man’s death.

The multi-storey car park was cordoned off by police at the main entrance on Sunday, after dozens of police cars descended on the street as horrified locals looked on.

Train station staff are believed to have found the man’s body on level one, near the western side of the car park, the Daily Telegraph reported.

The area is known to be frequented by people sleeping rough.

Forensic experts searched the scene for evidence as detectives began their investigations into the alleged incident.

Pastor Josh Hammann said locals were left shocked by the scene after a convoy of police cars arrived on the street.

“We understand that something really sad has happened,” he told ABC.

“This is very much a police matter, but our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved.”
