Everton captain Seamus Coleman says it is difficult to walk away from something you love and admitted he is “thinking” about signing a contract extension as the Irish defender’s contract expires next month.
The Toffees have offered Coleman, who was signed for £60,000 from Sligo Rovers in 2009, a new contract and the 35-year-old has no intention of leaving Goodison Park just yet, especially as he is still a vital member of the team. .
“The club means everything to me,” he said on Everton’s official website. ‘I guess I live and breathe it like everyone else. It’s been a tremendous journey – the last two or three years – and it’s not about you just coming to work, coming home and forgetting everything.
‘You live and breathe it, and it’s been hard. But I absolutely love this football club, I love this stadium. We’ve got another year here at Goodison so I’m happy they’ve offered me something and I’ll think about it.
“This football club means everything to me and, as I said before when I signed my last contract, it is difficult to walk away from something you love.”
Coleman missed most of the first half of this season with a concerning knee injury, but has still been an influential member of the team. He is always seen at Finch Farm talking to everyone in the building.
He said: “The last few weeks we have been confident, but without the support this year and without the unity in the group, from the players to the coach, what this group has done this season should not be underestimated.”

‘Two point deductions, something never heard before. Everyone was writing us off. We have seen it all; all the noise. The group, to be fair, stayed together. I know we can test the fans’ patience at times, but this is a group I’m proud to be a part of because of the way we responded.
‘Listen, to me, they are the best fans in the world. Of course they are, and through thick and thin, they are a very passionate fan base. “You can’t ignore the fact that these supporters have played a pivotal role in our continued existence.”
Coleman added that his family are now big Evertonians, including his wife Rachel: “They live and breathe it.” My two daughters love it. My little man is just getting into it now. Obviously my wife has been with me since we were 15 or 16, so she’s a big Evertonian too.
‘The family at home, Everton, has taken over our lives and we couldn’t be in a better place. We live it and breathe it, here and at home.’
