Aidan O’Brien landed his second Classic of the season when St. Mark’s Basilica cleverly accelerated to land the French 2,000 Guineas three-quarters long in Longchamp.

But O’Brien missed another classic victory when Mother Earth, winner of the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket, was denied in the French equivalent when she was defeated one length and a quarter by 38-1 outsider Coeursamba.

St Mark’s Basilica, which won the Dewhurst Stakes under Frankie Dettori last season, is now a 9-4 favorite for the French Derby next month.

O’Brien said, “He accelerates really well. He has an option to go to Ascot or the French Derby.

“The original plan was for him to go back and forth for the French Derby.”

St. Mark’s Basilica was ridden by four-time French champion jockey Ioritz Mendizabal on Sunday, booked by O’Brien after target rider Pierre-Charles Boudot was accused of rape last week.

Jim Bolger-trained Poetic Flare, winner of the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket, was beaten by two lengths in sixth place.
