A teenager is in critical condition after suffering a freak accident during an after-school track practice.

The 13-year-old boy was hit in the head during hammer throwing practice. at St Albans Reserve in Clearview, north of Adelaide, at approximately 5pm on Thursday.

Emergency crews treated the boy for a serious head injury before he was rushed to Women and Children’s Hospital where he is now fighting for his life.

The boy is known to have been from Christian Brothers College.

Police spent several hours at the scene on Thursday night, where they were seen talking to another student at the school.

Several members of staff at Christian Brothers College were present at the time but declined to comment on the incident. The advertiser reported.

The Enfield Harriers athletic club is based at the reserve, which has a Hammer throw circle.

The club is understood to have a list of safety policies in place for the hammer throw circle.
