The streaming giant is putting the money in the sweet spot as the massive field of 456 players will compete for a chance to win $4.56 million, which they believe is the largest cash prize in TV history.

But previous seasons of Fox’s reality singing competition show, X Factor, have previously spent $5 million on record deals, according to THR.

In the original dramatic series, hundreds of participants with little money accept an invitation to compete in children’s games for a tempting prize, but the stakes are deadly.

Presumably no one will actually die while taking part in the series of games based on the dystopian hit series.

Netflix Vice President of Unscripted and Documentary Series Brandon Riegg said of the upcoming program: “Squid Game has taken the world by storm with [director Hwang Dong-hyuk’s] captivating story and iconic images.

“We are grateful for his support as we make the fictional world a reality in this massive competition and social experiment. Fans of the drama series will embark on a fascinating and unpredictable journey as our 456 real-life contestants navigate the biggest competition series ever, full of suspense and twists, ending with the biggest cash prize ever.”

The reality series will consist of 10 episodes, which happens to be one more than the original dramatic series.

Squid Game became Netflix’s most-watched new series last year, drawing 142 million people in its first month — nearly double Bridgerton’s previous record.

The Korean drama is also being credited with adding 4.4 million new subscribers, increasing the number of Netflix subscriptions worldwide from 209 million to 213.5 million.

It boosted the company’s profits to $1.4 billion — nearly double the amount brought in in the third quarter of 2020.
