I wish there were more options here. For example, it would be great if the end of an album could result in the beginning of a similar album, or if you could turn the feature off for albums and turn it on for playlists. Still, it’s nice to have the option and I choose not to.
Listen to multiple albums by the same artist in a row
Sometimes I like to queue up albums by the same artist. There’s no easy way to do this on Spotify, but it’s not impossible. Head to any artist’s profile page, then scroll down to Discography section. You should see a Show everything link at the top right.
Click here and you will see all the albums in order. Click Play at the top and Spotify will play all the tracks from each album, from the most recent to the oldest. You can filter singles and EPs if you wish; just click on the arrow next to the word All in the upper right corner and select Albums.
Again, this is not perfect. I would prefer to listen to an artist’s catalog in chronological order, rather than starting with the most recent album and working backwards. The only way to achieve this is to create a playlist or search for a playlist created by someone else.
Look for playlists that are not “for you”
You might think that playlists are the same for everyone, but that’s not true. Many are created automatically by Spotify using your playing history, which, if you’re an album listener, means your playlist is packed with a hodgepodge of tracks from whatever you have on regular rotation at the moment. This can make all playlists feel the same, but there’s a trick to staying away from this routine: Look for playlists that don’t have the “Made for” marker at the top. These are public playlists curated by real human Spotify users, not something influenced by your personal listening habits. I find this method of avoiding For You’s algorithmic playlists helps me discover new music instead of just re-listening to familiar tracks.
Search albums without using the mouse
Finding an album on Spotify using just your mouse may require several clicks. Everything is much faster if you use the keyboard shortcut Control+K on PC or Command+K on Mac. This will open a search bar. Simply type what you want to hear and use the up and down arrow keys to search for a result.
From here you can hit Get into to open the album, artist, or playlist page. You can also hit Shift-Enter to immediately start playing the current selection. It’s the fastest way to find and play anything, including albums.
