‘It’s a Premier League team’: Gregg Berhalter praises ‘formidable’ Wales ahead of USMNT World Cup opener in Qatar, says Gareth Bale’s team ‘underappreciated’ by Americans

USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter has warned his team that they face a “very difficult” opening game in Group B against Wales on Monday.

Berhalter’s team is back at the World Cup for the first time since 2014 and is aiming to set a score before the next tournament, which the United States will co-host in 2026.

Additionally, there is excitement around the potential of the US roster, which is the second youngest in Qatar with an average age of 25 years and 214 days.

Gregg Berhalter highlighted his respect for Wales, the first World Cup opponent for the US.

But Berhalter has stressed to his team that Wales are not an opponent to be taken for granted.

“I think, at least for the American media, Wales is underrated,” Berhalter told reporters in Qatar. “When I look at his team, it’s basically a Premier League team.

‘For me, it’s a really good team, a formidable team. They have been in international competitions before, they know what it is. And it’s going to be a very difficult game.’

Wales have played in the last two European Championships and were particularly impressive in 2016, when they reached as far as the semi-final. But this is the first time Wales have participated in a World Cup since 1958.

Gareth Bale, a five-time Champions League winner with Spanish giants Real Madrid, heads up the Wales team.

Gareth Bale is Wales’ star player, and much of the US team knows him.

Bale played in the United States for LAFC this season and scored a goal in the MLS Cup final

He is a familiar player to many on Berhalter’s team after playing in Major League Soccer this year with LAFC.

And while there are concerns about whether Bale is fit enough to play the full 90 minutes, he came off the bench and scored for LA in the MLS Cup final earlier this month.

After Wales, the United States plays England before rounding out the group against Iran.
