The 45-year-old golfer was driving alone near Rancho Palos Verdes when his Genesis GV80 overturned at 7:12 am.

Justin Rose tweeted: ‘I just saw the terrible news. We know how strong you are, we’ve seen it a hundred times. I hope and pray that you are well, my friend. ‘

Firefighters had to use a device known as the ‘jaws of life’ to break open the car and rescue Woods.

He was then taken to an unspecified hospital in LA, where he is now undergoing surgery to correct ‘multiple injuries’ to his legs, his agent Mark Steinberg said in a statement shortly after the crash.

Tiger Woods was in a car accident in California this morning, sustaining multiple leg injuries.

“He is currently undergoing surgery and we thank you for your privacy and support,” Steinberg said.
