- The Portuguese side is desperate to tie Mendes to an improved contract

- Liverpool are interested and Mendes may be refusing to negotiate a new deal
The talented 18-year-old Sporting Lisbon star Nuno Mendes has delayed signing a new contract with the club due to interest from Liverpool.
Mendes impressed this season, having previously been linked with Leicester and Newcastle.
The left back is also a target for the Reds, according to A Bola, who reports that he doesn’t want to scare them off by increasing his release clause in a new deal, which is already at £ 40 million.
Nuno Mendes can play left back or left wing back and made an impression for Sporting Lisbon
They claim Liverpool would ‘pull him out’ if the release clause is made higher.
Mendes already has a long-term deal with the Portuguese side, who have spawned an array of talent over the years, including Cristiano Ronaldo.
He is the latest generation of talented youngsters to make it to first-team level this season and his current deal runs until 2025.
Sporting has made improving his terms a ‘priority issue’ and is looking to increase his £ 12,000-a-week contract.
But his agent Miguel Pinho has not yet joined the club and they would be ‘behind schedule’.
The Portuguese star is attracting interest from elsewhere and Liverpool is said to be thrilled
Mendes has a £ 40m release clause and is reluctant to raise it in a new deal
A number of teams, including Liverpool, are likely to follow the situation with Mendes in the run-up to the January transfer window, and uncertainty over the transfer market, which has been badly affected by the coronavirus pandemic, makes his decision all the more important.
Mendes has said he “looks forward to renewal,” but the teenager and his agent will no doubt weigh serious interest from elsewhere before putting pen to paper.
The Reds signed Olympiacos left back Kostas Tsimikas in the summer to cover up Andy Robertson, which appears to diminish the chances of bringing in Mendes.
