Island 8, also known as Koh Similan, southeast of mainland Thailand, received the first group of tourists on October 15 after the area was closed for the monsoon rainy season.

The Similan Islands are a group of 11 small islands in the Andaman Sea off the coast of Thailand.

Known for their crystal blue waters, vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life, they are a popular destination for diving, snorkelling and sightseeing.

It comes after the death of a woman who was swimming off another Thai island and was cut by a boat propeller.

The Thai national had been bathing on Koh Larn island with a foreigner when she reportedly suffered lacerations to her chest, body, right knee, right foot and left arm in the incident last year.
