Army leaders in Spain started an investigation after photos appeared with soldiers who seemed to be drinking beer while their weapons were on the floor.

The soldiers ordered drinks after a stop in the popular tourist town of Villafranca del Penedes, the capital of a vineyard in Catalonia, where 12 separatist leaders with a 25-year prison sentence have just been tried.

A Spanish Army spokesman said Monday that an investigation was under way and pointed out that disciplinary action would be taken if it was confirmed that they were drinking alcohol while carrying weapons.

The photos were taken on Saturday when the men stopped en route to their base in the southern Spanish city of Ronda after exercises in northern France.

They are supposed to take their weapons, according to which sources were without ammunition, because the vehicles they were in had to stop to refuel.

Historian Josep Lluís Alay, based in Barcelona, tweeted: & # 39; Spanish army forces in Catalonia with automatic weapons and a few beers. & # 39;

Pro-independence politician Gabriel Rufian seized the soldiers' faux pas by sarcastically claiming: & # 39; It's just poor guys playing Airsoft & # 39; before they added: & # 39; I'm sure the automatic gun after the beer will weigh less. & # 39;

The photos were taken in the midst of a new war of words between politicians from Madrid and Barcelona following the arrests last week of nine Catalan separatists on suspicion of planning violence.

Seven of the nine were taken into pre-trial detention and led to protests involving thousands of people in Barcelona on Saturday.

Earlier this year, 12 separatist leaders were tried at the Spanish Supreme Court.

They are still waiting to find out whether they will be sentenced to 25 years in prison, including rebellion and misuse of public funds following a referendum on independence of 1 October 2017 that was later declared illegal by the Spanish courts.

Villafranca del Penedes is the capital of the Alt Penedes region.
