Captain Sergio Ramos has been dropped from Spain’s roster for Euro 2020 in a sensational phone call from coach Luis Enrique, who instead called inexperienced Eric Garcia.
Ramos is the Spanish player of all time with 180 caps and the eighth highest goalscorer, but he has had an injury-ridden campaign and played just 21 times in all competitions for Real Madrid this season, including 15 LaLiga appearances.
Luis Enrique said he told Ramos on the phone Sunday evening that he was not on the squad and that he had addressed the 35-year-old’s absence just after announcing his 24-man squad.

Sergio Ramos is the player with the most limits in Spain, but has not been included in the selection for Euro 2020
Spanish coach Luis Enrique said he couldn’t choose Ramos due to a bad string of injuries this season
“I would like to send a message to Sergio Ramos, our captain, who is not on the list because he has not been able to compete in the right condition, or even train, since January,” he said.
“It was a tough and tough decision, but it’s the best for the team.”
Ramos said the decision hurt, but accepted that it was best to focus on getting back to full fitness.
“ It pains me to not be able to help my team anymore and not play for Spain, but in this case it is best to rest, fully recover and come back next year as we always have, ” he says . said on Twitter.
‘It hurts not to represent your country, but I have to be honest and sincere.
‘I have fought and worked with body and soul every day to get to 100% for Real Madrid and the national team, but things don’t always go the way we’d like.
‘I wish all my teammates the very best and I hope we have a great European Championship. I’ll be another fan encouraging from home.

‘A big shout out to everyone and # VivaEspaña Bandera de España and #HalaMadrid ⚪ always!’
Ramos underwent knee surgery in January and could not start two LaLiga games until 2021.
He sustained another injury last week and didn’t play a role in Real Madrid’s last game of the season against Villarreal on Saturday, as they missed the LaLiga title for Atletico Madrid.
If he’s played, like in Real’s 2-0 defeat to Chelsea in the Champions League semi-final, he looked rusty and out of pace.
Aymeric Laporte was first mentioned in Spain’s squad since changing his nationality

“I would have liked Ramos to be in the squad, but I didn’t think it was feasible as he was practically incapable of competing,” added Luis Enrique.
Ramos started nine of Spain’s ten qualifiers and was part of the team that won Euro 2008 to end La Roja’s 44-year wait for a major trophy.
He was also part of the team that won its first World Cup in 2010 and went on to become the first ever international team to win three consecutive major tournaments by winning Euro 2012.
His absence means that Spain will miss a crucial character in the dressing room as they try to return to former glory after disappointing appearances in recent tournaments.
Spain was knocked out of the group stage as holders during the 2014 World Cup, then fell in the last 16 stage at Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup.

They will also have to find a new penalty taker as Ramos had taken on the responsibilities for some time, often outwitting goalkeepers with the ‘Panenka’ routine he first performed in a semi-final penalty shootout win on Portugal at Euro 2012.
Ramos’s lockout also means that no Real Madrid player will represent Spain for the first time ever in a major tournament after Enrique chose not to call up Nacho, who has been one of Real’s most reliable defenders this season due to his long absence. from Ramos and Raphael. Varane.
Enrique, who used to play for Real Madrid but moved to Barcelona in a controversial way before coaching the Catalans, insisted he had nothing against Zinedine Zidane’s side.
He said, ‘If Dani Carvajal and Ramos were fit, they would have come. I don’t make my list like this (based on team preferences). ‘

Spain had the chance to name 26 players after UEFA changed its jersey number rules, but Enrique decided to name just 24.
Laporte, the center of Manchester City, was included in the squad as expected after switching nationality to Spain earlier this month.
Enrique was instrumental in getting Laporte to sign up for Spain, but he said the French-born player’s inclusion had nothing to do with Ramos.
And he said he was ready for the storm of criticism that awaits him for leaving out one of Spain’s best ever players and a hugely popular character.
“It hurts not to represent your country, but I have to be honest and sincere,” Ramos said
‘It has nothing to do with it. He (Laporte) is someone who can give us a lot, but it can’t be seen as related to Ramos’s absence, ‘he added.
“Any decision about Ramos has always been controversial, but I know where I am and I accept that as normal and I don’t expect it to affect the squad.”
But the biggest surprise was the inclusion of Laporte’s Man City teammate Garcia, who started just one Premier League game with City this season.
Enrique also had to leave out another injured defender in the center of Athletic Bilbao, Inigo Martinez, but he remembered Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta.
Other surprises were that Paris Saint-Germain’s Pablo Sarabia was named as one of the forward after 13 Ligue 1 appearances this season.
Sarabia and Wolves forward Adama Traore, who was also called up to the tournament, has only made one start for Spain.
Spain kicks off their Euro 2020 campaign on June 14 against Sweden in Group E before taking on Poland and Slovakia.
They will play their three group matches at La Cartuja Stadium in Seville after Bilbao was stripped of hosting rights by UEFA after failing to guarantee it could accommodate supporters due to coronavirus restrictions.
