Three people have died and 15 others have been injured after a fire broke out in a 24-storey apartment block near Benidorm.

Two adults and a minor lost their lives in the fire, which started around 2:15 a.m. this morning in an apartment on the 11th floor.

The three dead are said to be part of the same family. Their nationalities have not yet been revealed.

The other victims suffered smoke inhalation. Seven are women from 24 to 67 years old and the other eight are men and children from 13 to 57 years old.

The fire occurred at a property in Villajoyosa, about 10 minutes by car from this popular tourist spot on the Costa Blanca.

An unconfirmed local report describes the three dead as a child, his father and the young man’s grandmother.

Responding to reports that the three people who lost their lives, a minor and two adults, were part of the same family, a police spokesperson said: “We are still working on identifying the victims at this time.”

All but one of the 15 people who suffered smoke inhalation were taken to the hospital. A police officer who was also among the injured was treated at the scene.

On February 22, ten people died after a fire in a block of flats in Valencia.

A woman could be heard shouting in Spanish: “Help, help please” as flames took over the apartment where the three people who died are believed to have been trapped.

It was not immediately clear this morning whether she was one of the victims.

A man can also be heard screaming in the agonizing footage posted by a viewer.

The housing block is a two-minute walk from the housing estate where Russian deserter Maxim Kuzminov was shot dead on February 13.

The 28-year-old helicopter pilot, branded a traitor by Moscow after defecting to Ukraine last year, was living under a false identity after moving to the Costa Blanca late last year.

The murder, which is still being investigated by police, has been attributed to a Putin squad.
