SPA DOCTOR: Rebalancing in a mystical alpine retreat
My stress level was under control, I thought.
But recently I was diagnosed with Axis Disorders, a condition in which the pressure of daily life disrupts the balance of hormones.
It concerns the hypothalamus (a part of the brain that regulates sleep and emotions), the pituitary gland and the adrenal glands (both involved in hormone production).
When they work together, they regulate stress response, mood and energy levels. If they don’t, it can lead to chronic stress.
Bad Ragaz is a luxury medical spa in the Swiss Alps that uses nearby thermal mineral waters.
There is a choice of five-star hotels, a medical center, a cosmetic surgery facility and two spas.

The Haki Reconciliation Ritual – a crazy mix of therapies that feels like a complete psychological retreat, crammed in a few hours.
It starts in the “Room of the Senses”, where an immaterial operation voice encourages me to play vowel sounds with her.
Then colored lights flash and I am asked to press a large button when I choose my favorite – green.
The voice then calls ‘choose your favorite scent from the bottles for you’. I don’t like it and, ironically, I feel my stress levels rise.
Then it is a powerful body scrub and massage with an emphasis on lymphatic drainage and tension release. Finally, I am relaxing.
In the end it all goes supersystically if you choose a symbol and paint on a canvas while you think about what you want to throw out of your life.
It is not the standard spa package. But a few days later I still think about it.
Am I in balance? No, but I can see how I could get there.
- Healing Holidays (healing holidays.co.uk) offers a three-night health check program in Bad Ragaz from £ 1,892 per person. Otherwise, the “haki reconciliation ritual” will cost £ 267 for 150 minutes.
