Burnley recorded their first win in 11 Premier League games as relegation-threatened Vincent Kompany’s side defeated 10-man Brentford 2-1 at Turf Moor.

The Clarets took the lead thanks to a Jacob Bruun Larsen penalty in the 10th minute after a foul on Vitinho by Sergio Reguilon, who received a straight red card.

David Datro Fofana, after having made a notable mistake at the end of the first half, doubled the lead with a shot shortly after the hour mark.

Kristoffer Ajer scored a goal for Brentford with eight minutes left in normal time, but Burnley were able to see what was their first victory of 2024 and only their fourth in the league this season.

Boss Kompany had stressed before the match that they had not given up hope of avoiding relegation and after ending their winless run, the gap between second-bottom Burnley and safety is eight points with nine games left to play.

Meanwhile, 15th-placed Brentford are four points above the relegation zone as their winless streak extended to a sixth game.

Kompany made one change from last weekend’s 2-2 draw at West Ham, opting to leave out goalkeeper James Trafford, who has previously been an ever-present in the league this season, and bring Arijanet Muric into the team for his debut in the Premier League.

One of those brought into Brentford’s starting line-up when manager Thomas Frank made two adjustments following the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal was Reguilon, whose return proved extremely short-lived.

In an early Burnley attack, Josh Cullen lofted the ball into the box, where Vitinho fell to the ground following contact behind the on-loan Tottenham defender.

VAR intervened and after referee Darren Bond watched the incident from the sidelines, a penalty was awarded, Reguilon was told to leave and Bruun Larsen coolly dispatched the penalty past Mark Flekken.

Ivan Toney headed in as Brentford looked to hit back, and Burnley then breathed a sigh of relief when Dara O’Shea misjudged an attempted pass to Muric and the goalkeeper slid to clear the ball off the line with his boot, then saved Toney’s follow-up . preparation effort.

At the other end, Fofana somehow missed when it looked certain he would score from close range after a Lorenz Assignon cutback.

Muric then made a good save to deny Yoane Wissa, before Fofana, who had hidden behind Flekken as he prepared to take a shot, emerged to steal the ball, only to be thwarted by the Dutchman as he attempted to pass it

After Charlie Taylor fired over the Brentford crossbar early in the second half, Fofana was able to redeem himself in the 62nd minute when Wilson Odobert played him past Flekken.

Burnley’s push for more included a Zeki Amdouni shot that was saved by Flekken, before Ajer halved a Shandon Baptiste cross.

The Clarets had been 2-0 up against West Ham only to draw 2-2 and fans may have feared a repeat when Muric saved a Keane Lewis-Potter header.

After a long stoppage time, in which substitute Amdouni was substituted, the ball entered the Burnley net, but no goal was scored, as Toney was penalized for a challenge on Muric, before the final whistle confirmed the three points for the locals.
