Southampton 0-0 Burnley: Joe Hart keeps his second consecutive clean sheet in the St Mary draw

Burnley's winger, Aaron Lennon, gets frustrated when he faces Alex McCarthy of Southampton during the match at St. Mary's

On the one hand, Mark Hughes' Southampton managed to take a point from a game that they probably would have lost in the middle of their Premier League troubles last season.

On the other hand, if they can not win at home against a Burnley team that played in Turkey on Thursday night, then this could be another long season.

So really, it depends if you are a type of glass person half full or half empty. For manager Hughes, he is certainly the first instead of the second.

Southampton finished 17th last season and knows that securing survival is a marathon, not a sprint. They introduced Danny Ings in the second half and instantly seemed more animated, although signing the new loan could not deny the first 0-0 of the new season.

As for Sean Dyche and Burnley, they will take this tie between two Europa League qualifiers against Istanbul Basaksehir.

If any of the visiting players was still delayed by jet-lag from their trip to Turkey on Thursday, then they did not show it.

Dyche's team applied such pressure on the opening procedures that if they forced the players from Southampton further back, they would have been in the parking lot of St Mary's.

After seven minutes, Southampton had not managed a touch in the middle of the opposition, then Burnley had the ball in the back of the net.

Jack Cork found space on the left and finished to the right of Alex McCarthy, but was denied a goal against his former club by the lineman's flag.

With 10 minutes left on the clock, there are still no touches in between Burnley for Southampton. He was beginning to feel comical, although the only striker Charlie Austin was not laughing.

Burnley continued turning the screw. A long ball fell kindly to Aaron Lennon, who only had to beat McCarthy, but his shot went straight to the 28-year-old goalkeeper.

It seemed to act as a wake-up call for Southampton.

Finally, they left their own half and an acrobatic header from Mario Lemina forced Joe Hart to tip the ball. At last, signs of life from home.

Dyche seemed to have told his side to shoot at sight. In half an hour, they have achieved seven shots, although the art of finishing was somewhat deficient.

At the time of the break, an aerial kick by Ben Mee found Jeff Hendrick on the last post. His header was blank but McCarthy arrived in time to push wide.

It was more of the same after the break, when Stephen Ward of Burnley forced McCarthy to stop again, this time coming down to stifle his shot.

Hughes decided to make a change and chose a lifter with the atmosphere inside St Mary's that had stalled. Then came Ings, the local boy who signed a one-season loan from Liverpool on the day of the deadline, and the £ 16 million recruit Mohamed Elyounoussi from Basel.

Moments later, Burnley almost shot himself in the foot when Mee accidentally headed into his own net from a corner, forcing Ashley Westwood to clear the line.

Now it was Southampton's turn to attack. Ings crossed for Jack Stephens, who tried to beat Hart in his first place, but the former Manchester City goalkeeper got rid of him.

From the next corner, Hart denied a Lemina header. I was starting to make the £ 3.5m fee seem like a bargain.

Southampton was looking for a winner in five minutes of stoppage time, but neither they nor Burnley could find that final touch.
