An emergency situation has been declared as police search for a gunman involved in the shooting death of a woman.

Emergency services were called to a home on Robb Place in Mackay, northeast Queensland, to reports that a woman had been shot shortly after 4:30 p.m.

She was pronounced dead at the scene, while another man was found with non-fatal injuries to his hand, but the shooter could not be located.

Police issued a Public Safety Preservation Act around 5:20 p.m., closing the area within Robb Place and Paradise, Archibald, Kindermar and Denton streets.

Queensland Police warned the public to “avoid the area and those within the exclusion zone should remain indoors until further notice.”

More to come.
