Sophie Monk Reveals She Was Called ‘The Chubby’ In Popstars

Sophie Monk has spoken about the dark side of show business in a candid new interview with The great talk show of Jess Rowe.

The 41-year-old revealed on the podcast that she was dismissed as “the chubby” in early 1990s pop band Bardot, leaving her feeling “insecure.”

After the girl group split, she spent ten years as a model and actress in Los Angeles, an experience she described as “soul-destroying.”

‘I was very insecure. I was super sensitive at the time,” she said of her early career, which brought her fame on the reality show Popstars.

“People in Bardot called me ‘the chubby’ because I was round. I had breasts and the [other] girls were teenagers. That used to be fashionable.’

Sophie was a member of the group from 1999 to 2002, along with Belinda Chapple, Sally Polihronas, Katie Underwood, Chantelle Barry and Tiffani Wood.

She added: ‘You wouldn’t get magazine covers’ [if you were curvy] back in the days.

“Fashion has just changed drastically. It’s so good that girls love having big boobs – that’s how it should be.

‘It was encouraged – not directly – but it was encouraged based on the work you received [to be] straight up and down, so I was self-conscious.’

Elsewhere in her interview, Sophie revealed that she had been diagnosed with attention deficit disorder (ADD) and anxiety.

She said she’s not on any drugs for either condition, but she’s found “other ways to get around it.”

Sophie also opened up about her 10-year residency in Los Angeles, during which she took on several small roles without a major Hollywood break.

“It was soul-destroying,” she said. ‘I can only speak from my experience. Your friends are your agent. You’re like, “Are your friends your real friends?”

“Everyone wants to be famous, and then it gets lonely,” she added.

“I let someone I trust take a lot of money from me. I had a lot of hits there emotionally.’

Sophie also said she believed her high-profile relationships and reputation as a tabloid girl hinted at her career.

“It hindered a lot of roles, because then you become a socialite and they don’t take you seriously. Now you can get out of a reality TV show and become an actress,” she said.

Sophie explained that the paparazzi can also be a problem.

“The paparazzi would always be after you. In LA, everyone is being chased. They could wait for Britney Spears and they’d come after you,’ she said.

This exacerbated her anxiety because she was “always looking over my shoulder.”
